Kamuli Drivers Unveil New Executive, Vow to Retrain Drivers and Improve Passenger Safety

Kamuli District drivers, conductors and transport operators have launched a new leadership structure and approved a revised constitution as part of efforts to improve passenger safety and professionalise local transport services, according to Nile Post. The group also renamed itself the Kamuli-Jinja-Kampala Drivers and Conductors Association during a meeting at Bugabula Guest House Gardens on Wednesday.

The new executive is led by chairman Saadi Alibawa. He said the association will prioritise refresher training in modern and defensive driving, along with discipline, hygiene, financial literacy, saving, customer care and personal development. The leadership also wants members to build stronger habits around financial management, family welfare and community responsibility, while working more closely with government programmes and local stakeholders.

Kamuli District Internal Security Officer Abbas Bukenya, speaking for the Resident District Commissioner, welcomed the organisation of the transporters but warned that such groups can be vulnerable to criminal infiltration if membership records are not properly kept. He urged the association to ensure members are registered, roadworthy and properly licensed, and to help reduce crashes and improve traffic compliance. He also encouraged use of initiatives such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga.

Aloysius Nyenje, chairperson of the Kamuli Bodaboda Association, said cooperation between drivers and boda boda riders could strengthen the wider transport sector. The broader significance of the move is that local transport groups are trying to present themselves not only as business associations, but also as partners in road safety, public order and economic development.
