Kampala, Kasana-Luweero Dioceses Donate 11 Tonnes of Food to Hunger-Stricken Karamoja

The Catholic Dioceses of Kampala and Kasana-Luweero have sent 11 tonnes of food aid to communities in Karamoja facing severe hunger, according to Nile Post. The relief package includes staples such as rice, maize flour, sugar and other items, and the first truck was dispatched from the Uganda Episcopal Conference headquarters in Nsambya to the Diocese of Moroto.

The handover was coordinated by CARITAS Uganda, whose Rev. Fr. John Peter Musumba said the shipment was welcome but far too small for the scale of need in the region. He linked the crisis to prolonged drought and said the situation has affected livelihoods and contributed to loss of life. The organisation also said support from Ugandans and other partners is still needed.

Nile Post reported that Archbishop of Kampala Paul Ssemogerere made a personal contribution to the effort, including sugar, maize flour and rice. Beyond food, CARITAS Uganda said Karamoja also needs stronger healthcare services, calling on government and humanitarian actors to help improve medical support in the area.

The appeal reflects a broader humanitarian challenge in Karamoja, a semi-arid region in northeastern Uganda that has long experienced recurrent food insecurity. The latest donation is part of ongoing relief efforts, but the charities involved say longer-term solutions will be necessary to reduce repeated crises.
