Kampala court orders deportation of 3 Kenyans wanted for doctor’s murder

A Kampala magistrate’s court has ordered the deportation of three Kenyan men who are also wanted in Kenya over the killing of Nairobi doctor Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, according to The Observer. The men — police constable Bett Kiplangat Collins, businessman Pius Muiru Mbugua and Samuel Karanja Gathoni — were convicted in Uganda for unlawfully entering and staying in the country after they pleaded guilty to immigration offences.

The court heard that the trio entered Uganda through the Busia border and later stayed in Kyanja Heights Apartments without valid documents. Senior principal grade one magistrate Nicholas Aisu sentenced them to a caution and directed that they be removed to Kenya. A state attorney argued that illegal entry was a growing concern and urged the court to impose a firm response and deportation.

The Observer reported that the deportation order comes amid investigations by Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations into Dr Mutiso’s death in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. Kenyan detectives say forensic leads took them to Kampala, where two of the suspects were arrested with help from Ugandan police, while the third was later detained in Nairobi. The allegations linking them to the murder have not been tested in court.

If carried out, the deportation will return the suspects to Kenya, where authorities are expected to continue inquiries and determine whether charges will be brought in connection with the homicide case.
