What the report says

Ugandan musician Sadati Mukiibi, known professionally as Kalifah Aganaga, is seeking Shs500 million from KFC Uganda over what he says was the unauthorized use of his song “Nassanga Remix” in a promotional video. According to Nile Post, the claim is set out in a notice issued by Elgon Advocates and addressed to KFC Uganda’s managing director.

The lawyers allege that the company used the track as background music in a commercial post on its official TikTok account without obtaining consent, a synchronisation licence, a performance licence, or any other written authorization. They say Aganaga owns the copyright and related rights in the work and that the alleged use amounts to infringement under Uganda’s Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.

The demand also includes Shs50 million in legal costs, bringing the total sought to Shs550 million. In addition, the notice asks KFC Uganda to remove the video, stop any future unlicensed use of Aganaga’s music, and issue a written admission of liability. The lawyers said the company has seven days to comply or face possible legal action for injunction, damages and costs.

Nile Post reported that KFC Uganda had not publicly responded by the time of publication. More broadly, disputes over music use in advertising often turn on whether a company obtained the correct rights for both the composition and the sound recording.
