Kakise bus driver succumbs to crash injuries

The Observer reported that Alfred Ekongo, a Kakise Bus Company driver, has died after being injured in a bus crash in Soroti City. According to the report, Ekongo died on Wednesday at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since the accident on Sunday, July 19. The newspaper said he had lost both legs after the bus he was driving hit a bridge.

The crash involved a Kakise bus, registration number UAS 159P, travelling from Soroti to Kampala. The Observer reported that it happened at around midnight at Opuyo Trading Centre, after the bus left the road and struck a bridge. Witnesses cited in the report said residents had gathered nearby to watch a World Cup football match when a fight broke out among some youths. They said one youth tried to cross the road while being pursued, and the driver swerved to avoid hitting him before losing control.

Colleagues at the Kakise Bus Company office in Soroti described Ekongo as a careful and experienced driver, saying he had worked with the company for more than 30 years and had not previously been involved in a major accident. The Observer reported that his body remained at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination and burial arrangements.

Other passengers injured in the crash were still being treated at health facilities in Soroti, according to the report. The Observer said police had not released an official account of the crash by the time the story was filed, despite attempts to obtain comment.
