Kagame Says Rwanda’s Formula One Deal Is Bigger Than Sport

What the report says
Rwanda’s new 10-year agreement to host the African Grand Prix is being framed by President Paul Kagame as more than a sporting milestone. In remarks reported by Nile Post after the announcement on Tuesday, October 13, Kagame said the deal could help attract investment, support job creation and strengthen Africa’s standing in global sport, with benefits that extend beyond Rwanda itself.
The agreement is tied to a planned Formula One race in Rwanda’s Bugesera district, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali, near the new international airport. According to the report, the circuit is expected to be built to FIA Grade 1 standards and completed in the early 2030s, when the Grand Prix could join the championship calendar. The event would return Formula One to Africa for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
Kagame said Rwanda sees major international sport as part of a wider development strategy, pointing to earlier events the country has hosted, including the Basketball Africa League, the FIA General Assembly and the UCI Road World Championships. He also stressed that private-sector investment will be important to the project and that the opportunity should be viewed in continental terms, not as a Rwanda-only initiative.
Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali welcomed the agreement as a significant moment for the championship and for Africa. The article says the project is intended to support tourism, infrastructure and commercial activity, while also creating longer-term opportunities for local businesses and workers tied to the sport and event economy.
