Kabale Launches Shs495m Rehabilitation of 58.2km Community Roads

What the report says
Kabale District has begun rehabilitation work on 58.2 kilometres of community access roads, funded with Shs494.7 million from the district’s Road Maintenance Grant. According to Nile Post, the project is intended to improve local transport links and make it easier for farmers to move agricultural produce to markets.
The district said the works cover three road sections: the 23.9-kilometre Bushuro–Rwakihiirwa–Rwene road in Maziba and Buhara sub-counties, the 10-kilometre Kakoma–Butuza–Kyasano–Bunagana road in Kamuganguzi Sub-county, and the 24.3-kilometre Rwonkoronga–Nyombi–Kyevu–Kagoma–Katete Nkora road serving Kahungye and Butanda sub-counties. Kabale District Engineer Januario Turinawe Bagamuhunda said the work will include site preparation, clearing, earthworks and drainage improvements.
District officials linked the road upgrades to broader economic goals. Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe said better roads should help farmers expand commercial agriculture and reach markets more easily, while also opening access to other opportunities. LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe urged residents and local leaders to help supervise the projects and maintain the roads and drainage channels.
Kabale Resident District Commissioner Maj. Godfrey Katamba said access roads remain a government priority under the NRM manifesto and noted talk of increasing the Road Maintenance Grant in future, depending on funding arrangements. In general, road rehabilitation is often central to rural development because it can lower transport costs and reduce post-harvest losses, especially in farming areas.
