What the report says

Kosovo’s parliament elected Justina Shiroka Pula as the country’s new president in the early hours of Wednesday, in a vote that helped avert another round of early parliamentary elections and eased a period of political strain. Al Jazeera reported that lawmakers chose her near the constitutional deadline after the governing Vetevendosje Movement and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo reached a compromise, with Shiroka Pula securing 81 votes, just above the two-thirds threshold required.

Her election came against the backdrop of protests over convictions of former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders and renewed pressure on politicians to amend the legal framework for the Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Chambers. The agreement that enabled the presidential vote also included changes linked to that court, which has tried former KLA figures for alleged war crimes. Al Jazeera said the deal reflected a pragmatic effort to prevent a deeper institutional crisis after weeks of deadlock and public unrest in Pristina.

Shiroka Pula is a 73-year-old academic and former minister with a long career in higher education and public institutions. She has also served in politics, including as Kosovo’s minister of energy and mining and later as a member of parliament for the PDK. Her election makes her Kosovo’s third woman president. Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera said her broad background and acceptability to multiple parties may help restore stability, though her influence will depend on how she works with the government and opposition.
