The Associated Press reports that U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín on Monday temporarily stopped Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery from moving ahead with their planned $81 billion merger. The order, granted at the request of a coalition of states, keeps the deal on hold for at least 14 days and could be extended to 28 days while the court considers a broader request for a preliminary injunction.

Twelve states led by California sued last week to block Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner, arguing the combination would reduce competition in parts of the entertainment industry. Their complaint focuses on theatrical film distribution, major movie releases and basic cable channel licensing, rather than primarily on streaming. The states say a merged company could gain enough market power to raise prices, reduce consumer choice and affect workers and content production.

Paramount disputes the states’ antitrust case and says the deal reflects current market realities, including competition from major technology and streaming companies such as Netflix. AP reports that Paramount has pointed to regulatory approvals in several countries and to clearance from President Donald Trump’s administration, while reviews continue in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The proposed tie-up would bring together major Hollywood and media assets, including Warner’s HBO Max, CNN and franchises such as “Harry Potter” with Paramount’s CBS, Paramount+ and film properties including “Top Gun.” The court has scheduled an Aug. 3 hearing on the states’ preliminary injunction motion, though AP notes the timetable could change.
