Defector reported that Jonas Vingegaard abandoned the Tour de France after crashing late on Stage 15 near Évian-les-Bains, France. According to Patrick Redford’s account, the two-time Tour champion fell with about 22 kilometers remaining, landed hard on his right collarbone, was taken by ambulance, and later left the Visma team bus for a car bound for the hospital. It was his first Tour withdrawal since his 2021 debut.

The report says the crash came as Visma-Lease a Bike was trying to help chase down a breakaway before the final climb. Victor Campenaerts was leading the peloton into a routine roundabout, followed the race motorcycle’s outside path around a traffic island, then braked while correcting his line. Defector’s account describes Vingegaard as the rider who fell first and most heavily in the resulting slowdown. Visma director Marc Reef later suggested the motorcycle had contributed, though the article disputes that interpretation.

The crash also intensified debate over anti-doping controls earlier that day. Defector reported that Vingegaard and race leader Tadej Pogacar were woken for unannounced blood tests outside the usual testing window, a step the International Testing Authority permits only under specific suspicion. The results were not reported, and the ITA’s reasoning was not fully public. Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel and others criticized the timing, with Pogacar suggesting lost sleep might have played some role, while Defector cautioned against treating the test as an explanation for the accident.

The withdrawal matters because Vingegaard was running second overall and again challenging Pogacar after major injuries in recent seasons. Defector framed the episode as another example of cycling’s narrow margin between elite performance and sudden misfortune.
