Jon Jones offers Khamzat Chimaev advice as he looks to rebound from first loss of his career - MMA Fighting

What the report says
MMA Fighting reported that Jon Jones has offered public advice to Khamzat Chimaev as the former UFC middleweight champion tries to recover from the first loss of his professional career. Chimaev lost a split decision to Sean Strickland at UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey, after starting strongly but fading as the fight went on, according to the report by Damon Martin published July 22, 2026.
Jones, speaking to Red Corner MMA, said he was surprised by Chimaev’s defeat and urged him to reassess the areas that could be used against him in future fights. MMA Fighting said Jones pointed specifically to endurance work and comfort fighting from his back, suggesting Chimaev should build a stronger defensive and submission-oriented jiu-jitsu game for situations where he is not controlling the wrestling exchanges.
The article noted that Chimaev had been a heavy favorite against Strickland and had success at points in each round, but he moved away from wrestling as the fight progressed. MMA Fighting also reported that Chimaev had considered moving to light heavyweight after the loss, but has since focused on remaining at 185 pounds while pursuing another bout with Strickland.
Jones framed the setback as a mental as well as technical challenge, saying losses can affect a fighter’s confidence and self-image. Chimaev’s next fight has not been announced, but MMA Fighting reported he continues to call for an immediate rematch before the end of 2026.
