Najjar, a surgeon and vice president for clinical innovation at Johns Hopkins Health System, discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence in cancer care during an appearance on “Mornings with Maria.” Najjar said AI is beginning to help researchers detect cancer earlier, speed drug development and reduce administrative work in clinical settings, while cautioning that the field remains in its “early days” and needs more evidence from real-world use.

The segment focused in part on pancreatic cancer, a disease that is frequently found only after it has spread. Fox Business cited American Cancer Society figures showing a 13% overall five-year relative survival rate, rising to 44% when the cancer is detected before it leaves the pancreas. Najjar said recent research using AI to analyze CT scans found signs of pancreatic cancer as much as 16 months before human readers identified them, potentially giving patients more treatment options.

Najjar also said AI could accelerate cancer drug discovery by using computer models to test how potential treatments might interact with disease-related proteins before researchers move into laboratory work. He described the technology as promising but warned against overstating what it can currently deliver for patients.

Fox Business also reported that Najjar sees near-term benefits in AI tools that support doctors’ workflow, including medical scribes that prepare records and document visits.
