Johnny Depp looks unrecognizable as Ebenezer Scrooge in new movie - USA Today

USA Today reported that Johnny Depp made an unannounced appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, stepping onstage in costume as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film, “Ebenezer.” The surprise came at the end of Collider’s Directors on Directing panel, which had been focused on Zach Cregger and the filmmaking team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, rather than Depp or the new movie.

According to the report, the room went dark before a screen message introduced Depp as Scrooge. He appeared with period-style props including a top hat, cane and candle, addressed the audience in character, tossed candy onstage and exited as sounds associated with Jacob Marley played. After the appearance, the first trailer for “Ebenezer” was shown and also released online. USA Today also reported that Depp appeared in character at a Comic-Con installation in San Diego.

The film is directed by Ti West and is scheduled to reach theaters Nov. 13. USA Today framed the project as Depp’s first major Hollywood movie in years following his high-profile defamation trial involving ex-wife Amber Heard, in which both actors accused each other of domestic abuse.

The trailer reportedly emphasizes Depp’s screen persona and return to a studio spotlight, referring to past roles such as Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and the Mad Hatter. The Comic-Con rollout matters because it positions “Ebenezer” as both a holiday-season release and a potential mainstream comeback vehicle for Depp.
