World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open because of a right knee injury, according to a statement he issued through the ATP and reported by Al Jazeera. The decision means the Italian will also miss another major hard-court event in North America as the tournament in Cincinnati begins on Thursday.

Al Jazeera reported that Sinner said he had consulted his doctors and team before deciding he was not ready to compete. The 24-year-old added that his knee had been troubling him and that, despite ongoing work with his medical staff, he had to step away from the Masters 1000 event.

The withdrawal comes after Sinner also skipped the Montreal Masters, which ended the same day Cincinnati was due to start. He had arrived at the North American swing after a strong run at the 1000 level, and the absence follows his earlier choice to prioritise health.

Sinner’s exit is notable because the Cincinnati Open and Montreal Masters are key lead-up tournaments to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, set to begin in New York later in August. Al Jazeera also noted that world number two Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the event as well, citing a wrist problem.
