Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has criticised the consistency of Premier League touchline discipline after being booked during his side’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. BBC Sport reported that Jaissle was repeatedly warned by the fourth official to stay inside his technical area before referee Rob Jones showed him a yellow card in the 70th minute for going outside it again.

Speaking after the match and again a few days later, the 38-year-old said he did not believe a small step beyond his box while urging on his team should automatically lead to a booking. He suggested the decision looked harsh compared with the behaviour of other managers he has seen on the touchline. Jaissle is the only Premier League manager to have been cautioned in the opening weeks of the season.

Jaissle joined Newcastle from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli last month and has now taken charge of three league games. The BBC also noted that the Premier League, the FA, the EFL and Professional Game Referees introduced a participant behaviour charter in 2023 requiring coaches to remain in their technical areas, and that officials visited top-flight clubs in pre-season to brief managers on the rules. The issue matters because it highlights ongoing questions about how consistently touchline regulations are enforced across the league.
