What the report says

Greenock Morton are facing a difficult spell on and off the pitch, with BBC Sport Scotland reporting a poor start to the season and financial pressure linked to problems at major sponsor Dalrada. The Championship club have lost their first seven matches, while uncertainty over funding has added to concern among supporters at Cappielow. The article says the club has been community owned for five years and that recent resignations from volunteer directors at Morton Club Together have added to the sense of instability.

According to BBC Sport, Dalrada’s sponsorship deal began in June last year and was initially worth £540,000, with a further £240,000 committed in September. More recent payment issues have reduced that income, creating a cash-flow shortfall. A separate investment proposal from multi-club group Estrella, which had planned to buy a 35% stake for £750,000, was withdrawn last week after it said Morton’s financial and sporting position had worsened.

Morton general manager Mark Kelly said the club is not yet at the point of shutting down, but warned that November could be tight. He said fundraising and support from the local and wider Scottish football community should help provide some breathing space. A supporter fund raised more than £27,000 in its first 48 hours.

On the field, Morton’s latest defeat came when Arbroath scored a stoppage-time winner. Despite the result, BBC Sport highlighted positives from teenager Dean Black, who equalised with a long-range strike, while 17-year-old Louie Murphy also played the full match. The report suggests the club’s immediate challenge is to stabilise finances while trying to protect its long-term football development.
