Isoke Warns Corrupt Local Government Officials of Tough Action

Brig. Gen. Henry Isoke, head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, has warned local government officials in Uganda that corruption will be met with disciplinary action, prosecution and efforts to recover misused public funds. The message was delivered in Kampala during a Wednesday meeting of local government leaders at Imperial Royale Hotel, convened by the Ministry of Local Government to discuss President Yoweri Museveni’s anti-corruption directives.

According to Nile Post, the gathering brought together Resident District Commissioners, district chairpersons, chief administrative officers, district service commission chairs and other officials. Isoke urged them to tighten accountability systems, improve oversight and strengthen internal controls so public resources are managed lawfully and service delivery improves. He said local governments should make planning, budgeting, procurement, financial management and recruitment more transparent, and use technology to improve record-keeping and public access to information.

He also called for closer cooperation among accountability and law-enforcement institutions, including the Inspectorate of Government, the Auditor General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, police and procurement regulators. Isoke said councils would ultimately be judged by the quality of services delivered and the completion of public works on time. He welcomed Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara’s revived “Expose the Corrupt” campaign and urged both officials and citizens to help protect public resources and report suspected graft.
