What the report says

Sudan’s army says it has made a new advance against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by capturing al-Mazroub, a town in North Kordofan, after fighting on Friday. In Al Jazeera’s report, the Sudanese armed forces said the town is a key RSF position and that taking it could help disrupt the group’s access to fighters and supply routes between North and West Kordofan. The army also described the move as part of a broader effort to weaken RSF positions in a region that has become a major front in Sudan’s civil war.

The report said the army has recently claimed additional gains elsewhere, including in Blue Nile state, where it said it struck RSF and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North fighters and inflicted heavy losses. Blue Nile officials also said RSF drone attacks were intercepted, though the RSF did not immediately comment on either claim. Al Jazeera noted that independent confirmation of battlefield claims remains difficult during the conflict.

The fighting is part of a war that began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF and has spread across much of Sudan, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Al Jazeera said the army now controls Khartoum and much of the north, east and centre, while the RSF holds most of Darfur and parts of Kordofan. The article suggested that control of Kordofan is especially important because it links western and central Sudan and has become a focal point of displacement, hunger and continued combat.
