What the report says

FIFA is under pressure to review, and possibly discontinue, its newly created Peace Prize after awarding it to US President Donald Trump. According to Al Jazeera, several members of the FIFA Council raised concerns during a meeting in Zurich and pushed for changes, including ending the award altogether. The matter has now been referred to FIFA’s 22-member Football Social Responsibility Committee, which is expected to examine how the prize was created, whether it should exist, and whether it should continue to be given out.

Al Jazeera reported that FIFA announced the annual prize in November 2025, saying it would recognize people who had taken exceptional actions for peace. Trump became the first recipient a month later, at a ceremony in Washington, DC, where FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised him. The award drew criticism almost immediately from football officials, rights groups and players, with some arguing that FIFA was moving beyond its sporting remit and into politics.

The current review comes amid broader scrutiny of Infantino’s leadership. Al Jazeera noted that he has also faced backlash over a plan to open premium FIFA competitions to private investors, a proposal that was later dropped. The Peace Prize debate is likely to matter because it raises questions about FIFA’s neutrality, its human rights commitments and how far the organization should go in making awards outside football.
