What the report says

Ugandan singer Iryn Namubiru has described a difficult period in her family life, saying her relationship with her mother broke down during her first pregnancy. In a social media post reported by Sqoop Uganda, Namubiru said she was living abroad with her husband in 2002, away from relatives and friends, when she became pregnant with her first child. She said she initially told only a close friend, then informed her mother later in the pregnancy.

According to Namubiru, the situation worsened when her mother stopped speaking to her around the third month of pregnancy and remained distant until several months after the baby was born. She said she had hoped for basic maternal support and a congratulatory message, but instead felt isolated during an important moment in her life. She linked the conflict to disagreements over money and her mother’s disapproval of her marriage.

Namubiru said she had helped with travel arrangements for her mother and half-brother to visit the United Kingdom and paid part of their airfare, but that this did not satisfy her mother’s expectations. She also said she later learned that her mother had made clear she did not want to speak to her. The post adds personal context to Namubiru’s public image and reflects broader tensions that can arise when family expectations, financial obligations and marriage intersect.
