Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of attacking the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident the kingdom said killed two Filipino crew members. The BBC reported that Bahri, Saudi Arabia’s national shipping company, said the ship was involved in a “security incident” while sailing through the waterway on Monday night. Maritime security firms said the vessel was hit by projectiles near Oman’s Musandam Peninsula.

According to the BBC, the Saudi foreign ministry condemned what it called Iran’s targeting of the tanker and urged restraint to protect international navigation and energy supplies. The report said a second tanker, Senegal Prosperity, was also reportedly struck around the same time. Iran had not responded directly to the Saudi allegation at the time of publication. Instead, Iranian officials said earlier that two tankers had caught fire after hitting mines while using what they described as an unauthorized route through the strait.
