CNN reported that the Pentagon revised its Defense Casualty Analysis System on Saturday, adding more than 140 wounded service members and again listing four soldiers killed in Iranian strikes last week. According to CNN’s review of the updated data, the combined toll for Operation Epic Fury and a newly listed category now stands at 18 U.S. troops killed and 624 wounded since the United States began its war with Iran on Feb. 28.

The update followed scrutiny over apparent decreases and fluctuations in the public casualty database while Iranian attacks were ongoing. CNN reported that the total number of wounded had previously peaked at 482 in its observations last week. Defense Department acting press secretary Joel Valdez said on social media Thursday that the reductions reflected temporary disruptions on the DCAS website. CNN said it observed minute-by-minute data glitches and asked the Pentagon for more information Friday, but had not received a response by Sunday afternoon.

CNN said the Pentagon also introduced a new DCAS category called “Overseas Operations,” covering killed and wounded personnel starting July 7, without specifying which conflict the category refers to. The list includes three Army soldiers killed in Jordan by an Iranian strike and one soldier killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone.

The July 7 start date is significant because CNN linked it to President Donald Trump’s recent War Powers notification to Congress, in which the administration said a new conflict with Iran had begun. Lawmakers, including Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, have questioned the administration’s handling of both casualty transparency and the War Powers timeline.
