Iran is calling on the United States to follow through on the terms of a memorandum of understanding linked to efforts to calm the conflict and stabilize the Strait of Hormuz, according to Al Jazeera. The appeal came after renewed strikes between the two countries increased fears of wider escalation in the Gulf.

Al Jazeera reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian made the remarks on Tuesday at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He said Iran was prepared to return to the agreement’s terms if Washington did the same. Iran’s foreign ministry also accused the US of failing to keep its promises under the deal.

The article said the interim arrangement was reached in mid-June with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar. It was intended to extend a ceasefire and open a 60-day negotiating period. Under the reported terms, Iran would help clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz and allow shipping through, while the US would ease its naval blockade, lift sanctions, grant oil-export waivers and begin work on reconstruction support.

Al Jazeera said the ceasefire later broke down and the memorandum expired last month. Pakistan and Qatar again urged implementation of the deal, while Qatar said it was working with partners to seek a peaceful resolution and reopen the waterway.
