Iran says talks with Oman over a new maritime route linked to the Strait of Hormuz are in the final stages, according to comments from Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei reported by Al Jazeera on Sunday. Araghchi told the cabinet that the negotiations with Muscat were close to being finalized, while Baghaei said the sides were seeking an arrangement that would respect sovereignty and national security interests.

The discussions matter because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, with roughly 20 percent of global oil consumption normally moving through it. Al Jazeera reported that the precise shape of the proposed route was not immediately clear. Oman had not publicly responded at the time of publication.

The report comes amid renewed regional tension and shifting messaging from Washington. Al Jazeera said US President Donald Trump had said he would pause new attacks on Iran if a rapid deal could be reached, and that any agreement should include the opening of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.
