Iran’s security chief meets Putin, delivers message from Khamenei

What the report says
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow on Thursday with Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in talks that Al Jazeera reported were centered on regional security and the wider conflict involving Iran. Rezaei also delivered a letter to Putin from Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, according to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV.
Rezaei said the discussion covered security arrangements in the region, Russia’s role in helping end what Tehran describes as US aggression against Iran, and possible post-war planning. He also said energy cooperation was discussed, including a possible gas pipeline from Russia to Iran. The Kremlin had not immediately published its own account of the meeting, while Russia’s TASS news agency said it took place in the Senate Palace.
The visit came as Qatar and other regional actors were pursuing diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, and as Iran said it would not enter talks with the US on ending the war or reopening the Strait of Hormuz unless Washington met Tehran’s conditions. Separately, Iran’s foreign minister held calls with counterparts in several regional capitals about the same broader developments.
The meeting also highlighted the deepening relationship between Moscow and Tehran, both under Western sanctions. The two countries signed a strategic partnership treaty in 2025, and Al Jazeera noted that the agreement expanded cooperation across several areas, though it does not include a mutual defence clause.
