Iran attacks US Gulf allies, causing a fire at Kuwait power plant

Al Jazeera, citing its staff and news agencies AFP and Reuters, reported that Iran launched drones and missiles at Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan on Sunday, July 19, 2026, widening the conflict after another night of US strikes on Iranian targets. Kuwaiti authorities said one attack set off a fire at a power and water facility, and the military reported damage at another such plant. Bahrain said it intercepted missile and drone attacks, while Jordan said it downed three of four Iranian missiles and summoned Iran’s ambassador.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had struck US bases in Jordan and Kuwait. Iran’s army said it targeted a US ammunition depot at Camp al-Adiri and air-defence radars at Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait, where US personnel are hosted. The three countries have US military installations and, according to Al Jazeera, have faced repeated Iranian retaliation since fighting resumed this month, despite an interim US-Iran ceasefire agreement reported to have been signed in June.

The Iranian barrage followed US attacks on sites in Iran, including areas in Hormozgan and Khuzestan provinces and Qeshm Island. Washington said the strikes were meant to punish IRGC forces linked to earlier attacks in Jordan that killed two US service members and to reduce threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s nuclear agency said the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant was hit; the IAEA said it was checking the reports and noted the site had contained no nuclear material during its last inspection.

Regional governments, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Lebanon, condemned the Iranian attacks and urged de-escalation. Separately, the IRGC said it stopped two ships in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the conflict’s risk to a key global shipping route.
