USA Today reported that ESPN executives had only minutes to decide how to handle Ryan Clark’s impending layoff while he was appearing on a live edition of “NFL Live” on July 20. Citing a person with knowledge of the situation who was granted anonymity, USA Today said another news outlet contacted ESPN after the 4 p.m. ET show had begun, seeking comment on a story that Clark was expected to be let go and setting a 5 p.m. deadline, when the program was scheduled to end.

According to the report, Clark was part of that day’s “NFL Live” cast and was appearing remotely rather than from an ESPN studio. ESPN leaders chose to tell him during a commercial break midway through the broadcast, rather than risk him seeing the news online during or immediately after the show. USA Today noted that such breaks typically last only a few minutes.

Clark later responded on social media to a TMZ account that characterized the exchange as him not being forced off the show. He wrote that he asked whether he should be done at that point and was told yes. He also posted a message of support for others affected by ESPN layoffs.

Clark, a former NFL defensive back, had been with ESPN for more than 10 years and appeared regularly on programs including “SportsCenter,” “Monday Night Countdown” and “NFL Live.” USA Today described him as one of several high-profile figures affected by ESPN layoffs that week, underscoring the broader impact of the network’s staffing cuts.
