What the report says

NBC News reported that Sara Gilson, a 43-year-old social media influencer, was fatally shot Thursday in Owasso, Oklahoma, in what police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide involving her estranged husband, Jeremiah Duffey, who used the name Shawn Duffey online. The killing came less than two weeks after Gilson posted a TikTok video accusing Duffey of being a pedophile. NBC cited police and court records in linking the post, the protective order and the earlier allegations against Duffey.

According to the Owasso Police Department, a girl and a parent told officers on June 9 that Duffey, who coached the girl’s traveling basketball team, had inappropriately touched her during an event at an elementary school. Police said another coach intervened and reported the incident, and that similar alleged conduct involving the same juvenile had been reported across multiple jurisdictions and states. Because Duffey was an Osage tribal member and the incident occurred on tribal land, police said the case was referred to the U.S. attorney’s office for review on a possible lewd molestation charge.

NBC reported that police then contacted Gilson, who obtained an emergency protective order on June 10 requiring Duffey to stay 100 yards from her and her home. On July 11, Gilson posted about the accusations to more than 30,000 TikTok followers, using a trend styled like a Netflix documentary.

Police said officers responded late Thursday after a 911 call captured screams and what sounded like a gunshot. A boy later called from a neighbor’s home and said his stepfather had shot his mother. Officers found both Gilson and Duffey dead from apparent head gunshot wounds. Gilson’s son was placed in protective custody and later released to an uninvolved parent; she is survived by a son and daughter.
