Indonesia is responding to a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province on Saturday morning, killing at least 51 people and forcing about 5,000 residents to leave their homes, according to Al Jazeera’s report. The quake’s epicentre was near Ende, and officials said it was followed by hundreds of aftershocks. A tsunami warning issued after the tremor was later lifted.

Rescue and emergency crews have been trying to reach some of the worst-hit areas while clearing roads blocked by landslides and assessing damage across scattered islands. Officials cited injuries, including 36 serious cases and 77 minor ones, and said more than 1,300 homes were damaged, with some villages left in temporary shelters or crowded public spaces. In places such as Maumere and Sikka regency, many residents slept outdoors or under tarpaulins because they feared further shaking.

The Indonesian disaster agency said helicopters, a rescue vessel and thousands of military and police personnel had been deployed. However, access remained difficult in areas near the epicentre, where communications were disrupted and some first responders had yet to arrive. Officials were also weighing whether to declare a state of emergency to unlock more resources.

More broadly, Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Al Jazeera noted that the same coastline was hit by a deadly quake and tsunami in 1992, underscoring why authorities are treating the current disaster as a major emergency.
