Indian journalist Tarun Tejpal convicted in rape case

An Indian court has convicted former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal of raping a former colleague, in a case that has drawn national attention for more than a decade. According to BBC World News, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court overturned Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal by a trial court in Goa and found him guilty under Indian laws relating to rape and sexual harassment.

The case dates back to allegations that Tejpal assaulted the woman in a lift at a Tehelka event in Goa in November 2013. The accuser cannot be publicly named under Indian law. Tejpal has consistently denied the allegations. He was previously arrested and spent around seven months in custody before the Supreme Court granted him bail.

BBC World News reported that sentencing was scheduled for later on Thursday. Tejpal may still appeal to a higher court. The Goa government had challenged the earlier acquittal, and its lawyer urged the court to impose the maximum punishment.
