According to CBS, the protests were launched by the Cockroach Janta Party more than a month ago and drew students, families, professionals and activists to rallies, sit-ins and hunger strikes in New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. The movement began with calls for education reform but expanded to include concerns about unemployment, public accountability and economic opportunity. Protesters celebrated at a long-running New Delhi protest site after news of the resignation.

CBS reported that organizers said their remaining demands included wider education-system reforms, compensation for families of students who died by suicide after exam-paper leaks, and assurances that protest participants would not face legal action. The report said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had previously announced fast-track courts for exam leak cases and planned legislation targeting cheating and corruption, but protesters argued those steps did not go far enough.
