India deploys police and restricts transport ahead of mass protest in Delhi

What the report says
India has moved thousands of police and paramilitary personnel into central Delhi and put transport curbs in place ahead of a planned youth-led protest, according to Al Jazeera. The rally is being organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which wants Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over changes to voter lists.
Al Jazeera reported that the demonstration, set for Saturday in central Delhi, is expected to be the largest in a series of near-daily protests tied to a voter-roll revision critics say benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. Police did not authorize a rally at Jantar Mantar, a common protest site, saying the request was late and that the CJP had broken undertakings from earlier demonstrations. Authorities also warned of a forceful response if the ban is ignored.
The restrictions have included barricades on roads, the closure of dozens of metro stations, the cancellation of some long-distance trains, and a temporary mobile internet suspension near the protest area, based on the reporting cited by Al Jazeera. India’s Supreme Court said some train service should continue and questioned a blanket metro shutdown. The CJP said many people had already been detained, while protest leaders argued the government was trying to suppress a peaceful movement.
The dispute centers on a voter list revision that the Election Commission says is meant to remove duplicate and ineligible names, while critics argue it has hit marginalized and minority communities. The protests are politically significant because they come months before key state elections in 2027.
