In the protocol, typically involving babies around 12 to 18 months old, a mother and child are observed through a sequence of episodes with toys, a stranger entering, the mother leaving and returning, and researchers coding the child’s behavior.

Ainsworth’s original work identified three main attachment patterns: secure, anxious-resistant or ambivalent, and avoidant. The avoidant infants appeared outwardly composed, often continuing to play and showing little obvious distress when the mother left or returned. Space Daily says later researchers added physiological measures, including heart-rate monitoring and, in some studies, cortisol sampling, and found that these apparently calm babies showed stress responses comparable to visibly upset infants.

The report frames the finding as an important correction to earlier surface-level interpretations. Rather than indicating unusually strong independence, avoidant behavior may reflect a strategy in which outward signals of distress are muted while the body remains highly aroused.
