IMAX CEO describes 'frenzy' after Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' shatters records - Fox Business

Fox Business reported that IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond described the opening of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” as a theatrical “frenzy” during an appearance on “The Claman Countdown.” According to the outlet, the film opened on a Friday and took in more than $124 million in ticket sales over its debut weekend, setting IMAX-related records and drawing heavy demand for premium-format screenings.

Gelfond credited Nolan’s film first, while saying IMAX helped amplify audience interest. The movie, described by Fox Business as a nearly three-hour action epic adapted from Homer’s ancient poem, was filmed exclusively with IMAX 70mm cameras. The report said the cast includes Matt Damon and Zendaya, with other premiere attendees including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo.

The IMAX chief said demand was so strong that unusually timed showings, including midnight, 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. screenings, sold out. He also recounted that Nolan had contacted him in February 2024 with a list of technical and operational requests needed to shoot an entire film in IMAX, including camera and projection-related needs. Gelfond said IMAX committed resources to meet those requirements.

The report also highlighted capacity limits for 70mm IMAX exhibition. Fox Business said there are only 41 such screens worldwide, and Gelfond explained that expansion is difficult because some parts are no longer commonly available and the economics work only in select locations. He nevertheless said IMAX continues to look for ways to grow the format.
