Ignite Change vocational institute takes skills beyond classroom with health, environment outreach

Dokolo Post reports that Ignite Change Vocational Training Institute in Oyam, Uganda, has carried out a community outreach programme combining health support and environmental conservation activities. The institute donated soap and nappies to mothers and caregivers at St. John XXIII Aber Hospital in Oyam District, an intervention hospital representative Fr. Ambrose Owiny Carpline welcomed as practical help for vulnerable patients.

According to the report, Programme Manager Normmy Otyeno said the effort was guided by a child-focused mission, with the institute seeking to support dignity, health and hope for children by assisting mothers and schools. Caregivers from Aber and Minakulu sub-counties, identified as Acola Lilly and Akello Betty, said the items would help reduce costs for families caring for mothers and newborns.

The outreach also included school-based environmental work at Aleny Primary School and Akura Primary School. Pupils and staff joined the institute in planting 300 timber, fruit and shade trees, with the stated aim of promoting conservation and improving school surroundings. At Aleny Primary School, the institute also constructed a rubbish pit to support waste management and hygiene practices.

School leaders cited by Dokolo Post said the initiative would provide long-term benefits and help teach pupils conservation values. Ignite Change Executive Director Emily John described the institute as more than a vocational training centre, saying it aims to pair employable skills with service-oriented community projects. The report presents the outreach as part of the institute’s broader involvement in education, health and environmental activities in the communities it serves.
