IGG Urges MPs to Lead Public Fight Against Corruption and Maladministration

The Inspectorate of Government has urged Uganda’s Members of Parliament to take a more active role in encouraging the public to report corruption and maladministration in their communities. According to Watchdog Uganda, the appeal was made by Deputy Inspector General of Government Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe during an engagement with Parliament’s Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee in Kampala.

Muhairwe said anti-corruption work is still hindered by public attitudes that can discourage whistleblowing, including fear of reporting wrongdoing and, in some cases, admiration for people accused of corruption. She argued that MPs are well placed to influence citizens because of their close contact with people at the grassroots level. The IGG also responded to questions about recent interdictions of local government officials, welcoming action against misconduct but warning that administrative decisions must follow proper procedure to avoid legal disputes.

She stressed that investigations and sanctions should be evidence-based and consistent with due process, noting that formal interdictions are handled by responsible public officers under existing public service rules. Her remarks reflected a broader balance between swift anti-corruption action and legal safeguards.

Muhairwe also outlined the Inspectorate’s planned priorities for the next financial year, including intelligence-led investigations, asset recovery, digital tools for leadership code verification, and stronger monitoring of IGG recommendations. The Inspectorate’s secretary, Rose Kafeero, said the agency is also pursuing digital transformation to improve efficiency and support Uganda’s wider anti-corruption and service-delivery agenda.
