What the report says

The Inspectorate of Government has opened investigations into alleged embezzlement, abuse of office, money laundering and maladministration at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), according to Nile Post. The move led Inspector General of Government Lady Justice Aisha Batala to order the interdiction of URSB Registrar General Mercy Kainobwisho and three other senior officials.

The officials named in the interdiction are Deputy Registrar General Alex Aganya, Commissioner for ICT and Innovations Arthur Kwesiga, and Assistant Commissioner for Business Registration Services Walid Kule. Nile Post reported that the investigation covers claims including alleged misuse of government funds, institutional mismanagement and other corruption-related concerns.

The action follows a directive from President Yoweri Museveni calling for senior URSB officials to be sent on forced leave so investigations could proceed. The development comes amid a broader URSB dispute that Nile Post said had already attracted attention from internal disciplinary processes, the Attorney General and the Inspectorate.

The IGG has also suspended URSB executive training at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi while the probe continues. The case is significant because URSB handles key business registration functions, and any extended disruption could affect public service delivery and confidence in the agency. 256 Newsroom is summarizing Nile Post’s report pending editorial review.
