Iceland Approves Shs32bn Grant for Schools, Water Projects in Three Districts

What the report says
Iceland has approved an $8 million grant, equivalent to about Shs32 billion, to support school construction and water and sanitation work in Namayingo, Kwania and Amolatar districts. According to Nile Post, the funding is intended to run over two years, from 2026 to 2028, and is tied to Uganda’s education and basic infrastructure needs.
The announcement was made by Iceland’s new Head of Mission in Kampala, Katrín Einarsdóttir, during a meeting on Tuesday with Finance Minister Henry Musasizi. She said the assistance would go toward schools under the education pillar and WASH-related projects, while stressing that Iceland wants clear oversight and accountability in how the money is used.
Musasizi welcomed the support and said Uganda has set out long-term development priorities through its Tenfold Growth Strategy. He pointed to sectors such as agriculture, tourism, minerals, science and technology, and related enablers as areas where partners can contribute. He also encouraged Iceland to help attract investment and tourism and promote Uganda as a destination for business.
The report adds that Iceland has previously backed projects in parts of Uganda, including Kalangala, Buikwe and Namayingo. In general, donor-backed investments in schools and water systems are often important in rural districts because they can improve access to services and support broader development goals.
