Leaders connected to the International Criminal Court have warned that diplomatic efforts to sideline the tribunal are undermining confidence in the wider international legal system. In a joint opinion piece published Thursday on Just Security, Paivi Kaukoranta, the current president of the ICC’s Assembly of States Parties, and seven former assembly presidents argued that pressure on countries to distance themselves from the court is aimed at weakening more than one institution. According to Al Jazeera, the authors said the ICC reflects a collective decision by states to create rules for prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. They also described the court as a last-resort institution rather than a replacement for national judiciaries, and rejected the claim that joining international bodies necessarily means giving up sovereignty.

The warning comes as the Trump administration has sanctioned ICC judges and officials and urged governments to isolate the court. The US, which is not a member of the ICC, has opposed the tribunal’s cases involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and earlier investigations involving US personnel. The authors framed the issue as a broader test of whether international law will apply equally or whether political power will determine its reach.

They called on the ICC’s 125 member states, along with international and regional organizations, to provide political, legal and practical support. The appeal adds to a wider debate over the future of multilateral institutions and the limits of state sovereignty in enforcing international justice.
