Ibanda Schools Receive Science Kits to Boost Practical Learning

Twenty government-aided primary schools in Ibanda District have received science kits from Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports, according to Nile Post, in an effort to improve practical science teaching and help pupils better understand scientific concepts. The handover took place in Ibanda Municipality and included items such as electricity experiment sets, measurement tools, magnetism equipment and other classroom materials for hands-on learning.

Ibanda Municipality Education Officer Johnson Abakunda said the schools were chosen based on results in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations. He said the selection covered both high-performing schools and some that had done less well, with the aim of rewarding good performance while also supporting institutions that need extra help. School leaders welcomed the support, saying many science lessons have traditionally relied heavily on theory because of limited equipment.

Deputy Mayor Fred Manywana praised the initiative and said practical learning can make science more engaging for children, while Assistant Resident District Commissioner Guma Godfrey Godwin called on teachers to safeguard and properly use the materials. The ministry has been rolling out primary science kits, often described as mini-laboratories, since 2021 as part of broader efforts to strengthen science education in Universal Primary Education schools. The development matters because it addresses a long-running gap in practical resources that education officials say has affected classroom instruction and pupils’ performance.
