What the report says

Education officials in Ibanda Municipality have cautioned private schools against reopening for lessons before the start of the next term, saying holiday classes interfere with learners’ rest and family time. The warning was directed at school directors and head teachers, with municipal authorities saying they had received complaints from parents and other members of the public about schools that allegedly end terms early and resume instruction during holidays.

The remarks were made by Ibanda Municipal Principal Education Officer Samuel Mugura Lukurwe during the release of mock examination results at the municipal council hall. According to the report by Nile Post, Lukurwe said the municipal education department wants schools to respect the official academic calendar, which sets aside holidays for learners to recover from the demands of the school term. He argued that keeping children in class during that period adds pressure and disrupts their break.

Lukurwe also urged parents to report any schools that ignore the approved calendar so that education authorities can take action. He said learners need time away from school to rest, spend time with their families and prepare for the next term. The guidance comes as schools in the municipality review mock exam performance and look for ways to improve academic standards while also protecting learner welfare. In general, school calendars in Uganda are set by education authorities to help manage term dates and holiday periods across institutions.
