‘I’ve Been Scammed Left and Right’: Demand for ‘Odyssey’ Tickets Gives Rise to Sketchy Scalpers - Variety

What the report says
Variety reports that intense demand for Imax 70mm screenings of “The Odyssey” in New York City has led to a wave of scalping attempts and scams targeting moviegoers. The film is playing in that format at AMC Lincoln Square 13, described by Variety as the only Imax 70mm screen in New York City and one of 41 worldwide. According to the report, listed shows at the theater were sold out, including 2 a.m. screenings running through Aug. 2 and other showtimes listed through Aug. 12.
The article centers on activity in the r/NYCmovies subreddit, where users have posted appeals for tickets and warnings about bad actors. A moderator identified as Tessa told Variety the community bans accounts reported for selling above face value or pretending to have tickets, but said enforcement is difficult because users can delete accounts and return under new names. The subreddit has also been advising buyers to check account histories, seek proof, consider in-person exchanges and use payment protections for online transactions.
Variety also found resale activity beyond Reddit. Tickets originally priced at $33 were appearing on eBay with bids starting at $69, with one pair of seats for a July 22 Lincoln Square screening listed as high as $1,200. AMC declined to comment to Variety on whether more showtimes would be added.
The situation highlights how limited-format theatrical releases can create scarcity even in a major market. Variety noted that New Yorkers willing to travel could still find Imax 70mm tickets at Cinemark Tinseltown Rochester, roughly six hours from midtown Manhattan.
