‘I Got Shs1.2bn, Not Shs10bn’: Gen. Sejusa Breaks Silence on ‘Modest’ UPDF Retirement Package

What the report says
Retired Gen. David Sejusa has publicly addressed claims that he received Shs10 billion when he left the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, saying the figure is inaccurate. In a post on his X account on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, the former Coordinator of Intelligence Services said his full retirement package, including pension, amounted to Shs1.2 billion after 46 years of military service.
According to Watchdog Uganda, Sejusa was reacting to a social media user who alleged he had taken home a much larger payout. He said the money was a one-time lump sum and suggested skeptics verify the details with the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the Ministry of Finance. He also clarified that the amount was in Ugandan shillings.
Sejusa used the exchange to contrast benefits available to retired senior military officers with those provided to some civilian public officials, saying soldiers do not receive extras such as medical cover, vehicles, houses or furniture. His remarks add to ongoing public discussion in Uganda about retirement packages and how the state recognizes long service by military personnel. In general, such debates often center on how public benefits are distributed across institutions, but Watchdog Uganda reported only Sejusa’s specific claims and comments.
