I Don’t See Museveni Giving Up in 2031, Says Birigwa

People’s Front for Freedom deputy leader Wasswa Birigwa has said he expects President Yoweri Museveni to seek another term in 2031, while arguing that it is too soon for PFF to name or endorse a challenger. Nile Post reported that Birigwa made the comments during an appearance on NBS Morning Breeze on Wednesday, where he said political conditions could still change significantly before the next election.

According to the report, Birigwa said PFF is concentrating on building its structures and expanding support rather than settling on a presidential candidate years ahead of the vote. He suggested that the period between now and 2031 is long enough for alliances and political arrangements to shift, making any current prediction about the race uncertain.

The remarks come as early positioning for the 2031 election is already taking shape. Nile Post noted that some leaders linked to the Patriotic League of Uganda have publicly backed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for that contest. Birigwa also questioned the current political landscape around Museveni and PLU, saying it is difficult to know how the field will look in five years.

Museveni was declared the winner of the January 2026 presidential election and is serving the 2026–2031 term. PFF, founded in 2025 by opposition figures including Dr Kizza Besigye, remains in a stage of organization and consolidation, according to the party’s senior leaders.
