Humanoid robot games put real-world skills to the test

What the report says
The second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing is being used to test whether humanoid robots can handle practical work, not just sports. According to Xinhua, one early contest staged a restaurant-like setting where robots had to use tongs, operate a microwave, and manage drink delivery under judges’ observation. Other scenario-based events have been designed to mimic tasks in hotels, factories, homes, logistics sites and other workplaces.
The competition, which runs through Wednesday ahead of the official opening on Saturday, has drawn 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries and regions across six continents, the report said. Organizers have expanded the event significantly from last year, with 51 competition items and 1,301 matches, including new tests of dexterity and service skills such as luggage handling, bed-making, shelf restocking and emergency-style tasks. Scoring favors smooth, accurate performance and, in many events, full autonomy over remote control.
Beijing officials told Xinhua the event is meant to help turn robotics demonstrations into real industrial applications by identifying tasks that resemble everyday jobs and by informing future technical standards. The broader context, as described by industry figures quoted in the report, is that China’s humanoid robotics sector is moving toward larger-scale commercialization, although major technical gaps remain in how well robots adapt to unfamiliar environments.
