Huawei calls on Makerere graduates to build careers beyond the degree

Huawei Technologies Uganda used a campus recruitment exercise at Makerere University in Kampala on Friday, August 7, to encourage students and recent graduates to look beyond academic credentials and build practical, adaptable careers in technology. According to The Independent Uganda, the event drew more than 200 students and was framed around helping final-year students and graduates move from university into the workplace.

Speakers at the engagement said a degree can provide an important base, but employers increasingly want confidence, communication skills, logical thinking, personal presentation and a willingness to keep learning. Dr. Donna Namujju of Makerere’s CEDAT Career Employability Hub told students to treat the degree as a starting point, while Huawei managers said opportunities in the company and wider tech sector remain open to young people who are prepared to learn and perform.

Huawei said it is hiring for areas including telecommunications engineering, computer engineering and software engineering, among others, and that it currently employs about 250 people in Uganda. The company also said it continues to invest in local ICT training through programs such as the Huawei ICT Competition, Huawei ICT Academy, Seeds for the Future, the National ICT Job Fair and campus recruitment.
