Medical Xpress reported on July 23, 2026, that a study in Cell offers new detail on the intrinsic cardiac nervous system, the heart’s internal nerve network often described as a “little brain.” The research, led by scientists at Yale University School of Medicine, examined how these rare heart nerve cells help regulate cardiac activity and respond to stress.

According to the report, the team genetically engineered adult mice so their cardiac nerves could be more easily identified, then studied gene activity in the cells. The researchers found two main groups, labeled Npy neurons and Ddah1 neurons. Using 3D imaging to map their routes through the heart, they found that the two cell types connected to different cardiac regions, suggesting separate roles.

The study found that activating Npy neurons slowed the heartbeat, while eliminating them caused rapid deterioration in heart function and death in the mice. Ddah1 neurons appeared less important during normal conditions, but became critical during a physical-restraint stress test. When those cells were absent, Medical Xpress reported that the stressed mice developed lethal electrical instability and sudden cardiac arrest.

The findings matter because the heart’s nerve network has been linked in broader cardiac research to conditions such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure and sudden cardiac death. The work was conducted in mice, so it does not establish a human treatment. However, the reported division of labor between cardiac nerve cell types may help guide future research into therapies that target the heart’s own nervous system.
