How landmark Everton compensation prevented Burnley record loss

What the report says
Burnley’s latest financial accounts show a much healthier headline figure, but BBC Sport says that improvement depends heavily on a large compensation payment from Everton and an internal repayment from the club’s ownership group. The BBC reports that Burnley received £38.8m from Everton over the Premier League’s profit and sustainability breach linked to the 2021-22 season, alongside £77.7m returned by Velocity Capital, the holding company involved in ALK Capital’s takeover.
Those payments helped cut Burnley’s reported 2025-26 loss to £9m, compared with losses of £24m-£29m in previous seasons. However, BBC Sport notes that without the Everton settlement, the club’s loss would have been £47.8m, which would have set a record. The article also says Burnley’s revenues reached an all-time high of £144.5m, but the underlying position still reflected ongoing strain from the leveraged buyout used to purchase the club in 2020.
BBC Sport explains that Burnley’s debt has fallen to £62.9m, down from much higher levels the previous year, and bank loans and debt factoring have also reduced. Even so, the club remains vulnerable because Everton’s payout is under appeal and could still be reversed in part or in full. The piece adds that Burnley’s accounts warn of continuing uncertainty, especially as the club returns to the Championship and faces lower income next season.
On the pitch, Burnley are also struggling, sitting in the Championship relegation zone after 14 games.
