Israel has announced four retaliatory steps against the United Kingdom after London moved to ban imports of goods made in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and introduced sanctions tied to settlement-related services and arms exports. The measures were reported by Al Jazeera on 9 September 2026 and came after UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described settlement expansion as unlawful and accused Israel of ethnic cleansing during a speech to parliament.

According to the report, the Israeli government said it would close the British consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days, remove British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat, end British training activity for Palestinian Authority forces in Ramallah, and bar entry to 12 British MPs and other named individuals. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and President Isaac Herzog both denounced the British action as unjustified interference.

The closure of the East Jerusalem consulate is especially significant because the site has long served as the UK’s main diplomatic presence for the Palestinian territories, while Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital. The report said the move reflects Israel’s broader rejection of foreign pressure over settlements and the status of Jerusalem.

Al Jazeera also noted that the UK was one of 12 countries that recently issued a joint statement supporting a two-state solution and planning trade restrictions related to settlements. So far, Israel has not announced similar countermeasures against the other signatories.
