How Erias Lukwago, Obore and Mufumbiro are faring at Luzira

What the report says
Former Kampala lord mayor and People’s Front for Freedom leader Erias Lukwago is being held at Murchison Bay prison in Luzira, where The Observer reports he has spent his time in the prison hospital because of ongoing health problems. In the account published by the Kampala-based outlet, Lukwago said prison conditions are worsening several chronic illnesses and making it difficult to manage medication, diet and sleep. The piece says a Mulago National Specialised Hospital report had recommended that he return to India for a spinal review.
The Observer also revisited the circumstances of Lukwago’s arrest on June 15, describing an operation at his Wakaliga home in which armed security personnel allegedly took him away after he had prepared to serve legal papers in a case involving opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye. The article says he was later charged with misprision of treason and remanded. Lukwago told the paper that he believes the wider political climate has become increasingly risky for opposition figures and their lawyers.
Beyond Lukwago, the story notes that former parliamentary communications director Chris Obore is also on remand at Luzira in a separate corruption-related case, while National Unity Platform deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro remains in prison as his case proceeds. Mufumbiro told The Observer that several co-accused had pleaded guilty, while he and others chose to contest the charges. The article presents Luzira as a shared holding point for several prominent political and public figures facing different legal battles.
